Its the End of the World As We Know It Pt. 3
Yesterday the supreme court of Israel told the speaker of the Knesset that he must allow a vote for a new speaker by Wednesday. The Speaker responded by saying no. The court responded to him, we are not asking you, we are telling you. That is a summary of the issue, which surprisingly, I see little on TV about. This is almost as serious as the virus. If the speaker does indeed reject the order of the supreme court then the rule of law in this country is out the window. Why would anyone have to listen.
Quarantine shmarentine.
I do not like the idea that Benny Ganz will be able to push his agenda with the help of an Arab MK who supports Hamas, but that is the system we have and we need to live with it. We need to respect the results within the system that we live in.
Bibi didn't win the last election, Ganz did. True Bibi got more votes but it is Ganz who is able to pull together the 61 seats needed to form a majority.
Don't like it. Too bad.
The whole world is in crises and all these guys can do is play games with the government. The national health service says that it is 2-3 months from going bankrupt, but Bibi needs to hold power. Had he stepped aside, Ganz would have formed a government of national unity with the LIkud, and with broad support of many other parties. They could be working together to face one of the most dangerous threats ever facing us.
Isn't that what is most important now???
Am I being to hard on Bibi? Perhaps.
Ganz should have tried to form a unity government, and he did. However, he told his voters that he would not sit with Bibi. So perhaps a 6 month truce to form a unity government. That should have been done but the truth is that Bibi has to realize that he lost and Ganz is holding the cards. He knows that the first law Ganz will pass is to forbid a MK who is indicted from forming a government.
He is scared and meanwhile the country suffers.
Which leads me to wonder why are there so many people who still don't understand how serious this is. They are right to say that 97-99% of us won't die.
So what is the big deal?
The big deal is what happens if the 1% all day within the same 6 months. 1% of the population of the USA is over 3 million people. In Spain and Italy they don't know what to do with the bodies. In those countries the numbers are in the thousands.
Wake up.
I went on a website I haven't gone to in a very long time to see what is going on in the Haredi world. I am happy to report that the vast majority of the writers and readers get it. Yet a ridiculous amount don't. One guy was trying to say that the social damage is as bad as the physical. There is no way he would be able to be in his house for 3 whole days with his three kids over the first days of Passover.
Seriously!!!
THEN DON'T HAVE KIDS.
I am lucky that I have a yard and can spend time outside. My children and grandchildren who are in Israel have moved in. I am very grateful they are here but I miss my quiet and privacy. That is a very small price to pay to know they are OK.
To make them feel at home I started to cook again.
When I went to Yeshiva University , I made a wicked smoked turkey stir fry on my hot plate ( which I understand are now banned). After I got married I would make pasta occasionally. Since I have moved to Israel I have gotten serious about smoking meat. I have gotten decent at making smoked brisket but what I really miss is cold-cuts.
There is something about Israeli cold-cuts that gives them a flavor very different than what we got in the states. I think it is too much garlic.
So I bought a book called The Brisket Chronicles.
Best book ever.
A few months ago I made my first corned beef. It was a disaster. It came out very stringy because I over cooked it.
Not to worry. The Brisket Chronicles had a recipe for that ( pull the strings apart and fry them).
I hit it on the second go around.
Next up Pastrami. A little more work but that came out very good as well. As a side I made sour pickles and something called a potatonik. The latter is basically potato kugal bread ( no other way to describe it) and it was great.
I have also made three different kinds of brisket as well as an Italian dish called Bolloto Misto, which literally means mixed meat. You take beef, veal, chicken and sausage. Boil it in a pot of vegetables and spices and viola. All from one book.
There have been many other items I have made but I won't bore you. It is just that I find cooking can take your mind off of ,corona, screaming kids, failing business, the economy etc...
I think the family likes it but I am not sure they would tell me if they didn't.
I find it great therapy and it helps me think straight as well.
Maybe Bibi should open a restaurant.
