The Bad, The Ugly and the Good
I got into a bit of trouble over the last post. I said there was nothing much to say. That was not entirely true. Firstly all three of my grandchildren had birthdays. Also my youngest daughter finished the army. I am not sure how I forgot these very important things that I know you were all waiting for an update on . I am truly sorry. The truth is these are very important things to me but I figured that for those who read this blog that care, you already knew. I was catering to those of you who may not care and ended up hurting some feelings
Boo Hoo.
Anyway, lots of stuff to talk about now.
One of the most evil people in the world have been removed. I don't want to get into the controversy that this has caused in the USA but I must be getting more Israeli because I don't get it.
In any case I find that I am sleeping better. Most of the anxiety that I have here is caused by the constant rhetoric coming from Iran threatening to kill us all. I know that the threat has not been eliminated but this guy was a bad guy, and the main person coordinating Iran's proxies and the threats against us.
The world is a bit better off if you ask me.
On a lighter note, I saw a few movie's
The first was called ' The Officer and the Spy.' It was about the Dreyfus case, in which the french government , looking for a spy in the late 19th century, accused and sent to prison a Jewish officer named Alfred Dreyfus. I knew a bit about the topic but wanted to learn more. This case was very important to the founding of the State of Israel. It was at this trial that a young reporter, named Theodore Herzl, realized that no matter how well Jews could assimilate, no matter how loyal they are to their country, they will never be accepted. This led him to start the modern Zionist movement which in turn led to the creation of Israel.
So I sat down in my seat and as soon as the movie started I realized I made a mistake.
The movie was in French.
So now, not only am I sitting in a theater full of French people, I have to read the entire movie in Hebrew.
Since my Hebrew is not good enough for this I was ready to leave but decided to give it a shot.
Truth be told it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was able to catch 40- 50% and fill in most of the rest just by knowing the basics of the story. My wife also helped fill gaps but since I detest talking in movie theaters ( and Shul) I didn't ask for too much help.
The movie was good but I could not say you should rush out to see it. ( even if you have English subtitles). I know this doesn't really qualify as ugly but I liked the title so go with it.
I do want to recommend the movie I saw last night. It is called 'JoJo Rabbit'.
It is a holocaust satire.
I know some of you are asking yourselves how I could go see that. It is a debate I have had in the past with my siblings and other people. Their feeling is that no matter what, we do not make fun of the holocaust.
I agree with that but I do think we can use humor to convey the absurdity of the holocaust and anti antisemitism and I doubt there will be another movie that will do it as well as this one.
Some of my fondest memories of hanging out with my father was when we used to watch Hogans Heros, a comedy about Americans in a German POW camp. He loved how stupid the Nazi's were made to look.
If he could get over it then so can I ( making fun of the Nazi's not the Nazi's themselves).
It is such a timely film as it really highlights how prejudice, and antisemitism in particular, is just dumb. ( I do not have a better word)
If you think you can handle an absurdist, surrealist movie about the holocaust then I highly recommend this one.
There is more to say. As I mentioned I will get to vote a third time soon and the early polls are showing
Drumrollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Nothing will change at all.
I will elaborate more on my next post which will hopefully be sooner rather than later
