Last night, around 11 pm, throngs of people took to the streets of Tel Aviv, waving Israeli flags, handing out sweets, and singing patriotic songs. We had just found out that Israel had purposely bombed a hospital in Gaza, and 500-800 people were killed. It wasn't 1400, but we are clearly on the right track to achieve proportionality.
I hope everyone reading this understands sarcasm (I have found that most British people can't).
This is what really happened.
At around 11 pm, I was getting ready to go to sleep. I have limited my news watching to three times a day: once in the morning, then at midday, and before I go to sleep. It was then that I found out on Sky News, France 24, CNN and even the WSJ that Israel had purposely destroyed a hospital, killing at least 500. Within 30 minutes of the explosion, the Canadian government blasted Israel. Most of the rest of the world soon followed.
I understand why the Arab street exploded with calls of death to the Jews and death to America. What I can't understand is why our "allies" did not wait a few hours before the condemnation.
The answer is obvious; they can't wait to start hating us again.
My initial thoughts were that perhaps we hit a hospital by accident. It has happened in the past, as terrorists set up launchers and command centers near hospitals and schools, etc. I was hoping that was not the case, but war, if anything, is unpredictable.
You would think that our allies would know this. You would think that at the least, they would not think it was done with intent. Just follow the logic that any 2nd grader would be able to discern.
For the first time since Hamas and PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihad) started their war to terrorize and destabilize Israel, the world was willing to wait for Israel to go in and end Hamas forever. Israel had the best news coverage I can remember since before the first Lebanon War in the '80s, but that coverage always had the undertone of trying to equate the devastation and mutilation of our civilians to those in Gaza.
The media was waiting.
After the first two days, after backing Israel unconditionally, world leaders started to warn Israel to be careful of civilian lives. In the link I attached yesterday, the case was made that Israel is the only country in the world that is not allowed to defend itself.
How true that is.
I think Hamas underestimated the support that Israel received. They did not think that the mutilation of Jews would elicit such a harsh response. It didn't in the Arab world. It was even celebrated.
They were losing the PR war.
I am not suggesting that Hamas or PIJ bombed their own people, but shouldn't that have been the first thought, as opposed to immediately blaming Israel?
Everyone knows Hamas hides behind their people. Two days ago, they blew up a bridge so people could not head south for safety. When fuel was sent in for humanitarian reasons (for hospitals), they took it for themselves for the upcoming war. I could go on, but why was logic dismissed?
Any child can see that Israel would have nothing to gain by this; in fact, this is just the type of event that would turn the world against it. Who would gain from that?
Is everyone stupid? Maybe, but I think the answer is easier than that. They hate us, and they are waiting for reasons to hate us. This is so innate that all semblance of common sense goes out the window when Israel is involved. Do they think we are carpet bombing Gaza? Why haven't I seen one story of the dozen or so top Hamas and PIJ figures that we took out with these bombings? That is their purpose, not to kill civilians.
Why do they think there has been no ground invasion? It's so the civilians can get out of the way. Every minute that we hold back, another Hamas position is being fortified, and another booby trap set.
Why are we withholding humanitarian assistance? Because we know that the people won't get it, and it will be used to strengthen Hamas, yet we agreed to send that in as well.
Now we have to prove that we did not go against all common sense and bomb a hospital. Russia's first response was that Israel must prove it wasn't them.
It should be enough for Israel to show this proof to their allies, but it isn't, and so Israel has shown that not only do they have video but they have audio of PIJ members right after the explosion confirming it was them.
This also puts our soldiers at risk as now they know we can hear them.
I made the mistake of thinking that now the world understands what we are dealing with. That finally they understand what we must do and allow us to do it.
Clearly, I am the stupid one.
